One great book to help kids understand how God works in their lives. #Christianmom #Bible #Jesus #Godsplan #familygoals #kidlit

When I was a kid, I wanted to be a writer.

I wasn’t half bad, but after 9th grade, I simply stopped writing stories. There just wasn’t time in my busy high school schedule for story-writing, and science became my love. But following my biology degree from the university, I found myself at a church, teaching children about God’s love.

Even there, I didn’t feel the urge to write. It wasn’t until a couple years ago that I started to write again, and it is like my life has been re-purposed.

My 8 year old son now loves to write, and has cranked out so many stories and poems that we have a bookshelf stuffed with papers.

I really want to encourage him in his gifting, but I know that often LIFE just gets in the way.

One of the easiest ways you can approach topics like this with your kids is through fiction. Why re-invent the wheel or lecture a child about purpose when a story will stick in their head for a lifetime?

The other day I read The Tale of Three Trees to my boys at breakfast, and seriously needed a tissue several times. ?

This book is about three little trees that have big dreams, but when they eventually get chopped down, it seems that their dreams have been forever lost.

The author writes,

many, many days and nights passed. The three trees nearly forgot their dreams.

I think we can all identify, right?

Our kids have big dreams, and we used to have big dreams. But this story teaches us something true about God: he always has a plan.

In fact, when I asked my kids what they learned about God from this book, my eldest said, “God always has a plan for you, even if it takes a really long time.”

This tear-jerker ends by showing how each tree’s mundane purpose was RE-purposed by a great God for an incredible, eternal purpose.

Can’t we all use that message?

You and me, we mamas need this message.

Our seemingly mundane lives can be re-purposed by our great God when we give ourselves to him. Our kids also need this message, so they can approach life with hope.

I would recommend this book for ages 3-10, because the little ones will enjoy the story, and the older ones will understand the deeper message. I also recommend it for moms…but don’t forget to bring a tissue box!

You can find this book, “The Tale of Three Trees”, retold by Angela Elwell Hunt at your local library or on good old Amazon.
