Welcome to the Fun With Your Son Challenge!
Let me introduce myself…
GROW A DEEPER RELATIONSHIP WITH YOUR SON
And help him CONNECT TO GOD at the same time
You thought it would be easy to have spiritual conversations with your son.
It seems that every other mom knows how to do this.
“It’ll just come up naturally in conversation,” they say.
BUT WHAT IF IT NEVER COMES UP?
Connecting with God and with each other takes intentionality, and sometimes the busy pace of life doesn’t allow important conversations to come up naturally.
WHAT IF TALKING ABOUT GOD FEELS AWKWARD?
We either ignore the issue altogether or we pass our son a devotional book or Bible study to do on his own.
WHAT IF YOU PUSH HIM AWAY FROM GOD?
He doesn’t want to read the Bible alone or do his own Bible study because, frankly, it feels like homework. If you’d known he would leave the devotional book under his bed, you wouldn’t have wasted money on it in the first place.
There is an easier way….
…a fun way, where you enjoy being together, reading about the Bible, and even praying!
It’s called PARTNERSHIP.
Hi, I’m Christie.
I discovered the better way to my son’s heart.
I worked in Children’s Ministries for over a dozen years, so you’d think I would know a thing or two about natural spiritual conversations. But it was tricky for me!
First I tried devotional books to springboard our conversation. But I couldn’t find something that really engaged my boys and actually formed their faith.
Next, I tried workbook-style devotionals where my boys were supposed to reflect deeply and write paragraph-length answers. That was DEFINITELY not the answer for our family. They hated all the writing!
Frankly, I almost gave up. Then, one day I realized that when we read the bible or a devotional together, I can explain and help them dig deeper. They needed something in between regular devotionals and personal Bible studies. Something that would help them build some of the spiritual disciplines without it feeling like work.
Someday, they’ll do journals or Bible studies on their own. But the path to that kind of deep reflection goes through the land of PARTNERSHIP. When we partner, we can go deep AND have fun, which is the best way to a boy’s heart.
CHRISTIE HAS DONE A WONDERFUL JOB OF UNPACKING THE TRUTHS OF THE BIBLE IN A WAY THAT SPEAKS TO THE HEART OF YOUNG BOYS.

My ten-year old and I have loved using the Mother/Son Prayer Journal together. We’ve tried a lot of devotionals in the past, so we’re somewhat experts by now, and we agree this one is GOOD!
The daily readings are interesting and engaging, the discussion questions are just right (little boys don’t often feel like carrying on too long 😉) and the journal prompts are a great way for my son to share a bit of his heart without feeling the pressure to write a lot (he enjoys the option of drawing!)
I also love journaling my thoughts and prayers for my sweet son, so having space for that is such a gift.

Christie Thomas has produced the resource I wish I’d had for my boys when they were younger. She’s done a wonderful job of unpacking the truths of the Bible in a way that speaks to the heart of young boys. If you’ve wondered how to begin teaching your sons to pray, pick up this journal. But watch out…you might just find your own heart encouraged as well!

Let’s face it . . . it’s hard enough to get our busy boys to slow down long enough for a quick hug, let alone a meaningful conversation! As a mom of three boys, Christie Thomas probably knows this better than anyone. The Mother and Son Prayer Journal provides simple and interactive prompts for spiritual connection with boys. It’s encouraged some really special conversations between me and my son. I cherish the time we’ve spent with this book and I know you will too.

I loved the entire thing and there are such great ideas for journaling/praying. I learned a few things about David that I didn’t know before. You made David come alive like a real person and pulled out amazing biblical lessons.
LaToya Edwards, author of “Come to the Well: How To Connect With Book Through Journaling”, and boy mom.
The Mother/Son Prayer Journal has been such a huge blessing for my 8 year old son and I. It’s written in such a fun and adventurous and intriguing way–so perfect for boys! At first, my son wasn’t excited about doing this together but now he is the one asking that we do it!
The devotions are so fun and engaging and the activities and questions have brought us closer together. My favorite part about it is the special spot for the mom to write a prayer for her son after each devotion. It guides me in praying specific prayers over my son and I love watching him smile from ear to ear when I read the prayers back to him. I have noticed that my son and I have a deeper connection and better conversations after taking time to do this journal together.
Sarah Holmstrom, co-founder of Raising Prayerful Kids, and boy mom
Christie has written a beautiful book inviting mothers on a weekly date with their sons into the Word of God to ask questions, search for answers and teach them how to pray and hear from God for themselves. This will be a treasured book of memories for years to come as moms record the answers and see the spiritual growth of their sons.
Leann Woelk, Handle with Care Ministries, and boy mom
How much time is required?
Depending on how engaged your son is in the discussion question and prayer activity, each devotion should take about 5-8 minutes. How much journaling you do in your section is totally up to you!
Technically, the book is targeted at ages 6-12, although you can certainly use it with 13/14 year olds as well. If your son is 5-7 years old, you’ll want to make sure he can listen for 2-3 minutes while you read. If he can’t follow a couple minutes of reading aloud without pictures, you probably won’t enjoy this journal.
He does NOT need to be able to write, because you can write for him, plus there is often a drawing option.
I’m a homeschool mom. Will this be relevant to my son?
Absolutely! I began homeschooling in 2019 and was surprised to discover how many devotions rely almost exclusively on school examples and applications. How disappointing!
Wherever possible, I’ve made my examples as universal as possible. For example, instead of relating to the school playground, we talk about the playground in general. There are less than 5 mentions of school in the whole book, making it much more universally applicable.
Why aren’t there any pictures?
We tossed around the idea of adding some simple graphics, but each time we did, it took away from space for drawing/writing. However, if you use colored pencils or gel pens, this book will be full of doodles and colors in no time!
My son doesn’t like sports/video games/stereotypical BOY things. Will this be relevant to him?
Yes, yes, and yes! I am well aware that boys have varied interests. When I talk specifics about kids, I always mention a variety of options.
Here’s an example from the first devotion:
There are a lot of things we can chase:
– winning at the science fair,
– being the best on a sports team,
– doing the coolest bike tricks,
– or getting to the top level of a video game.
None of those things are bad. David was also an amazing soldier and leader and friend, and his people even wrote songs about how cool he was. But he didn’t chase fame, or money, or power. He chased God.
(What does it look like to chase God? Keep reading this book, and we’ll find out together!)
My son has studied David before. Is this the same?
I promise, we’re going way deeper than the story of David and Goliath. In Children’s Ministry and storybook Bibles, we tend to stick to the highlights, but this journal goes into nearly all of David’s life.
Unless your son has read all of 1 Samuel, 2 Samuel, and 1 Chronicles, there are parts of David’s story your son has not heard. I share stories like David’s time as a bandit, his complaints in the wilderness, and Absolom’s rebellion in a child-friendly way, but without glossing over the mistakes David made and the hard truths he learned.
