Use these Bible verses to pray for your son – they come right from the life of David! Also introduces a mother son prayer journal.
People will look at your son and label him. They may call him Shy or Busy, Sweet or Talkative. You may call him a wise son.
People may say less than kind words too, words like Annoying, Disrespectful, or Nerdy. You may call him a foolish son.
But you and I know the outer packaging isn’t the whole child. Only God knows what’s in your child’s heart, and he gives YOU the opportunity to join him in shaping that heart. You have the chance to make sure none of those manmade labels stick to your son, by making sure he knows the truth about himself.
What IS the truth about your beloved son?
✔️ He is fearfully and wonderfully made.
✔️ He was made to worship.
✔️ He has the ability to be an unselfish and wise son because God is with him.
Those are just some of the important truths we see in the life and writings of one of my favorite Biblical characters: David. I pulled all 5 of these Bible verses to pray for your son from the life or writings of David.
As a mom, you may be wondering how you can effectively raise your son to be a godly young man. Well, living out your own faith and praying for your son are the primary ways! In 2 Timothy 1:5, the apostle Paul wrote to his young friend Timothy that “I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also.” Timothy’s godly mother and grandmother had a huge impact on the life of this young man who became an influential Christian leader at a young age.
But how can you pray over your son? How do you know what words to say?
Easy…pull prayers from the Bible!
The following powerful verses from God’s word loosely follow my favorite way to pray comprehensively for my kids: the BLESS prayer. (Body – Labor – Emotions – Social – Spiritual) While there are many great verses from the word of God you could pray over your son (and I’ll share more below), these are the most relevant Bible verses for this 5-part prayer.
5 Powerful Bible Verses to Pray for Your Son
For his body: Psalm 139:14
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. (NIV)
Lord, I praise You because my son is fearfully and wonderfully made; Your works are wonderful, I know that full well. Thank You for creating him. Help him to see the parts of himself that reflect You and to treat himself and others as wonderful children of God. Amen.
For his labor: 1 Chronicles 28:20
David also said to Solomon his son, “Be strong and courageous, and do the work. Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord God, my God, is with you. He will not fail you or forsake you until all the work for the service of the temple of the Lord is finished.” (NIV)
Lord, please help my son to be strong and courageous, and to do the good work you have set before him. May he not be afraid or discouraged, for You, the Lord God is with him. I know You will never fail or forsake him. Please help him to know that too. Amen.
For his emotional life: Psalm 34:4-5
I sought the Lord, and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears. Those who look to him are radiant; their faces are never covered with shame. (NIV)
Heavenly Father, may my son seek You when he is afraid. When he does, answer him and deliver him from his fears. May he look to You and be radiant because of Your love, and may his face never be covered with shame. Amen.
For his social life: 1 Samuel 18:3, 1 Samuel 23:16
And Jonathan made a covenant with David because he loved him as himself. (NIV)
And Saul’s son Jonathan went to David at Horesh and helped him find strength in God. (NIV)
Lord, please help my son to find a friend who will love him as he loves himself. May this friend encourage my son to find his strength in You, and may my son do the same for his friend. Amen.
For his spiritual life: Psalm 51:10
Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. (NIV)
Lord, help my son to care about having a pure heart before you. Teach him to admit when he’s done wrong and to repent. Create in him a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within him. Amen.
Other verses and topics you could pray over your son:
- You can pray that your son would choose Jesus: “Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.” John 17:3 NIV
- Many of the proverbs of Solomon would make excellent scriptures for a mother to pray over her son, but here’s a great verse to start with: “Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.” Proverbs 1:8 NIV
- This verse echoes through Song of Songs, reminding young women and men to choose wisdom in their physical relationships: “Do not arouse or awaken love until it so desires.” Song of Songs 2:11 NIV
- You can pray for wisdom for your son! Try praying through this passage from the book of Proverbs 3:13-18 (NIV):
“Blessed are those who find wisdom,
those who gain understanding,
for she is more profitable than silver
and yields better returns than gold.
She is more precious than rubies;
nothing you desire can compare with her.
Long life is in her right hand;
in her left hand are riches and honor.
Her ways are pleasant ways, and all her paths are peace.
She is a tree of life to those who take hold of her;
those who hold her fast will be blessed.”
5. Pray that as he grows, he won’t become the kind of foolish man who overindulges in alcohol. “In the same way, deacons are to be worthy of respect, sincere, not indulging in much wine, and not pursuing dishonest gain.” (1 Timothy 3:8 NIV)
6. Pray for his relationship with his earthly and heavenly father, that his earthy one would be a good father and he would know how treasured he is by the “Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.” (James 1:17 NIV) Every good gift and every perfect gift comes from God, and your son is one of those good gifts!
